note | "Sex Life of a Cop" was written by Oscar Peck and published by Sanford Aday in 1959 under his Saber Books imprint. It was the only one of seven books published by Aday which was found to be "obscene, lewd, lascivious and filthy" by a jury in Federal Court in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They convicted Aday of trafficking in obscenity across state lines to Michigan. Aday received a 25 year sentence and $25,000 fine. In June 1967, the Supreme Court of the United States held that the book was not obscene and the earlier decisions were overturned. Aday was an unsuccessful novelist. Part of it was his books were too racy for the mainstream. Frustrated, he started his own press, with three imprints: Vega, Saber, and Fabian. These books often pushed the envelope when it came to incest, homosexuality, and detailed sex acts. As a jab to the local cops, he published "Sex Life of a Cop", by an alleged former cop, publicizing the book as being a true account of how cops are crooked and take liberties with the law and sex. Aday belonged to the early gay rights organization, the Mattachine Society. Aday was among the first to openly publish gay and lesbian themed books under his three imprints: Vega, Saber, and Fabian."
